Managing Visitors with an Unattended Kiosk in K-12 Schools

Over the last year or so we have received a number of inquiries from K-12 schools interested in using a kiosk-based unattended visitor registration system for visitor security.

While many of EasyLobby's customers use a kiosk in an unattended lobby for visitor management security - and have excellent results - we believe that an unattended visitor management system in a K-12 school is not the safest process of protecting children.

Many schools initially may be interested in the idea of using an automated, self-service method for their visitor management solutions, especially when they are understaffed with everyone busy doing multiple jobs.

Having visitors self register and create their own visitor ID badges is appealing.

But the fact is, the use of a kiosk with visitor registration software as a solution to visitor sign in at K-12 schools could add risk rather than reduce it.

If visitors are simply directed to a kiosk to sign in, there is no chance to notice if someone looks ill-at-ease, out of place, or is behaving nervously or suspiciously.

Also, while a kiosk can be set-up to screen each visitor against sex offender registries, it is too easy for a registered offender to use another person's license or to enter a different name to avoid getting flagged. This can be avoided with an attendant verifying that the picture on the license matches the visitor.

Anyone entering a K-12 school should have a purpose for visiting, which should be verified by a person greeting them in the lobby and then authenticating their identity by scanning their license.

EasyLobby Secure Visitor Management is the world's most widely used visitor monitoring software. It's in use at thousands of facilities, including many K-12 schools.
