Many of us at EasyLobby periodically review state and federal guidelines and laws to determine if our lobby management software needs to address new rules. One from the Federal Trade Commission recently caught our eye as something that our customers should know about. It's called the Red Flags Rule.
These are rules that have been implemented by the Federal Trade Commission under section 114 of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003.
The Red Flags Rule picks up where data security leaves off. It seeks to prevent identity theft by ensuring that your business or organization is on the lookout for signs that a crook is using someone else's information, typically to get products or services from you with no intention of paying.
Visitor management techniques that use visitor control software to scan the drivers license, or passport of visitors are a good way to verify the validity of someones identity. A questionable identity would raise a "red flag," or a suspicious pattern or practices that indicate the possibility of identity theft.
The Red Flags program requires that organizations must include reasonable policies and procedures to identify the "red flags" of identity theft they may run across in the day-to-day operation of their business. Red flags are suspicious patterns or practices, or specific activities, which indicate the possibility of identity theft.
Effective visitor management security is only one small part of addressing this bigger picture of controlling identity theft. But it is a part of the solution. By scanning the license and other identifications of visitors and employees, you can use visitor monitoring software to validate and authenticate a person's identity.
It's also good to know that the license reader that is part of our visitor management solutions can authenticate a license and tell you if it has been tampered with or is fake.
